Tangerang Trip and Treats: Sale Ristorante and Kakolait

Last weekend, my friends and I hied off to Tangerang for another quick get-away. And when I am with them, there seem to be an endless discovery of places to dine and to haunt.  This time, our gracious hosts — Joe and Eli –brought us to two of the most remarkable places in the city west of Jakarta — an Italian restaurant and a cafe.

First Stop: Sale Ristorante.

I guess we all love Italian food and when Sale popped up in the conversation, there was not a single opposition to it. Nobody had any idea of what to expect so we just trusted our  hosts and our hungry tummies (no one had breakfast yet).

Sale Ristorante is located in The Icon Business Park in BSD (Bumi Serpong Damai), Tangerang City and after driving around after missing the entrance to the complex, we found  the single ruko unit with an unassuming facade. It was crowded and the ambiance was warm and welcoming. As soon as the table was ready and the menu was issued, we placed our orders and the food arrived promptly.

The impression I shared with my friends was that the food really tasted Italian, the way an Italian chef would prepare them. I liked the use of fresh tomatoes in their sauces, and the flavors of the herbs, creams, and ingredients are well-balanced and not overwhelming — just right! There was also a generous supply of breads, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and water. Sale reminded me of another Italian restaurant I visited in the past in Kemang district of Jakarta.

Here are what we devoured:

  • Fusilli al salmone — spiral-shaped pasta with salmon in creamy sauce — was my personal choice. It was light, but filling, and tasty.20180527_142853-01

  • Ravioli ricotta e spinaci — ravioli filled with ricotta and spinach in tomato sauce. The tomato sauce was lovely, tangy, and flavorful that enhanced the taste of ravioli filling (right photo below).

  • Lasagna — probably the most generous and one of the best layered pastas I have tasted in Indonesia (left photo above).
  • Pizza cacciatora — grilled chicken, olives, mushrooms, mozzarella, and tomatoes on a thin crust. Yummy!

  • Pizza asparagi e pancetta — bacon, asparagus, parmesan, mozzarella, and tomatoes on a thin crust (left photo below). Yummy too!
  • Quinoa salad — cool, tangy, clean, and refreshing — complementary to the savory dishes, a good way to cleanse the palate before tasting another dish (right photo below). Loved it!

  • We also had creamy angel hair pasta, guancia di maiale brasata (braised pork cheek with aromatic herbs, and roasted pumpkin), and a beef dish with mashed potato and asparagus which all received a thumbs up.

Sale Ristorante is definitely a place to visit when you are in Tangerang. It can be found at The Icon Business Park, Block D/9, Jl. BSD Raya Barat, Sampora, Cisauk, Tangerang City, Banten. They are open daily from 11:00am to 10:00pm. Be prepared to shell out IDR150,000-200,000 [USD11-15 / PHP565-755] per head. It’s a near-perfect treat for one’s hard work. Cupping the Day Off at Kakolait

We capped, rather cupped, off the afternoon with coffee and chocolate at Kakolait, a cafe in Gading Serpong, Tangerang, where Joe and Eli brought us to.  I was so full from an Italian lunch that I felt I couldn’t take any more food or drink. But, looking at the menu board, something caught my tongue and tummy’s attention — hot dark chocolate. I asked if they could let the milk and sugar off, and they said they could but it would be bitter. I said, “I don’t mind.” Then everything in my tummy moved to give space to hot chocolate.

And this is what I got!

Smooth. Bittersweet. Warm. Orgasmic. My kind of chocolate. Close to Max Brenner’s. Enough said.

Find Kakolait at Ruko Golden 8, Block I, No. 33, Jl. Ki Hanjar Dewantara, Gading Serpong, Tangerang City, Banten. They are open daily from 9:00am to 10:00pm. Kakolait also has a branch in The Breeze, a mall in BSD, Tangerang. [Instagram: @kakolait]
